Wisdom teeth removal

Wisdom teeth are the four permanent adult teeth located at the top and bottom of the mouth in the back corners.

They are the last permanent adult teeth to emerge (erupt) in the mouth and generally appear in people aged between 17 to 25 years old. In some people, wisdom teeth don’t develop at all, or they appear, but don’t cause any problems.

Wisdom teeth can cause a variety of problems for oral health. It’s therefore very common procedure to remove them at the dentist.

Problems commonly associated with impacted or erupted wisdom teeth include:

  • Growth that extends at an angle into the next tooth, causing pain and misshapen teeth.
  • Growth that angles back in towards the jaw and back of the mouth causing pain and infection.
  • Growth of the wisdom tooth so that it’s at a right angle to the other teeth. This can cause pain and infection.
  • Growth that is normal (straight up and down, like with other teeth) however with the wisdom tooth trapped in the jawbone.

The team at Goulburn Dental Care have many years of experience in wisdom tooth removal. In some cases, wisdom teeth are extracted even if the impacted teeth aren’t currently causing problems.
